~ the benefits of summer

. ... ... .... ... .. .. ... ... .... .... .. . . .. .... .. .

My sweet sister, Rachel, blessed me with some berries from her garden/berry patch the other day...
so yummy.  Thanks, Rach..

I ended up making a batch of freezer jam with them.  And, with what was left...(ahem!) we had them with shortcake.

Growing up.  When things were "in season".  That item was basically the only thing on the menu for dinner that evening.  If we picked berries that day, it was Strawberries and Shortcake served warm with milk.  If it was Sweet Corn?  Well then, Corn on the Cob with a side of tomato slices.  Or Corn Pie..

:: The benefits of Summer!  Yes?

I'm looking forward to it.  Aren't you?

  3. MMMM! I love strawberry shortcake! That is next on my list of things to make. We are getting some strawberries from our patch now and I'm hoping to the shortcake with the berries I get from that.

  4. What a delicious and appropriate way to enjoy food! I didn't grow up that way. It was bologna and kool-aid and vegies from cans. Agh!! It's a wonder my generation of suburbanites made it!!! :)

  5. Did you know that I didn't realize strawberries were supposed to be red all the way to the center??????
I was eating some from the grocery and mentioned to Mike that they were white in the middle and how the ones we had at your home were red all the way through and how much better they were - figured they must be a different type. Mike picked the one we got this year so far from our new patch and it was red all the way through, and patiently explained that that was what strawberries, when ripened on the vine, were SUPPOSED to look like. Learn something new every day.... : P Grocery fruit is rapidly losing its appeal!!

    1. I'm sorry. I'm sorry you've been "stuck" in the grocery store all your life... as if I would ask, Where have you been?

      lol.

  6. Yes, fresh from the garden! We do that too! Whatever's ready, that's what we get.

For example, I pulled out the last of my spinach the other day and that is what we had for dinner. Sautéed spinach with garlic and olive oil and cannellini beans over whole wheat pasta. Yum! You can't beat fresh from the garden, in my opinion!

And, unfortunately, I have come to find out that a Mama bunny made her nest directly in the center of my strawberry patch. I was wondering why I kept seeing all these little white furs and chew marks on my berries, well, that's why! I was NOT happy, as much as I like bunnies, and usually they just make their nest in the lawn.

    Furry berries, yuk!

    1. Oh Yum!! Johanna... that recipe you shared here sounds so good. I would want to add walnuts, too. Why? I have no idea - other than I like meat. (you know.. walnut meats). Anyway.

I had to laugh at the thought of Furry Berries. Oooohh.... yikes.
