Here we come a caroling...

.. ... .... ... ... .... .. . .. .. .... .. .. .... .... .. . .. .

This photo (mix) has got to be one of my most favorite of moments and memories!  Caroling.  I loved it then and always will.

This evening I had the privilege to load my three kiddos, along with three of their cousins to attend a choral production with some home school families, from our church.  We knew quite a bit of them and I tell you - it feels so good to support friends, like this and this is only one way.
However,  on our way home, you can imagine - everyone wanted to sing and pretend they, too, were part of such a beautiful production and so we all took turns leading out in song one of our own favorite tunes.
Of course... those Christmas Carols are ALL so beautiful... and it took me right  back to my childhood days of when caroling in our church community or our neighborhoods was a REAL priority.   I found myself sharing this memory with my carload of choristers...

It was one of the most anticipated events of the year, for me.. to go Christmas Caroling.  Oh, the memories this evokes... Here is what I shared...

We always went Christmas Eve - with our church - to the large local community.  No matter the kind of weather.  I can remember going in the bitter cold, times of heavy snow (lots of memories on this one), even in the rain... however, the community KNEW we were coming. They expected us.  Prior to going our youth group would get together, a couple of nights before, to make up fruit baskets and bake cookies to take to folks along the way.
This event involved bundling up (little kids and all), carpooling and still there would be what seemed like a mile of cars following each other with their four-ways on... we'd all get out of the vehicles, trudge carefully to the front door, with flashlights and song sheets (though not really needed, as we sung from memory anyway). Someone would knock or ring the door bell.  Someone else would lead us out into song.  Joy to the World, Silent Night, Hark the Herald Angels sing, etc.
We'd all gather closer together our harmonious voices echoing through the night sky.  Sure enough the front door would open and huddled in the doorways were the elderly, the growing family, a single person and every now and then, the surprised or "unsure" person (of what to make of all of this).   Some would ask us inside for a cup of hot chocolate ( I remember one year, someone offered chili) ... SERIOUSLY! 50 + plus people getting served... sometimes we were asked to come indoors because of someone to sick to come to the door and they simply wanted us to sing our hearts out- and they with feeble voice did their best to join in.

It was beautiful.

We'd always end our four-part harmony caroling, at each home, with:

We wish you a Blessed Christmas,
we wish you a Blessed Christmas,
we wish you a Blessed Christmas
and a Joyous New Year.
Glad tidings we bring to you and your kin,
good tidings for Christmas and a Joyous New Year.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
(said in said- shout unison)

It seemed like forever - but starting at 6pm sharp! and ending more times than not at 10pm (getting to the last folks on the list) was a long time, but worth it - we'd all head back to our church to finish up any remaining cookies and fruit from the fruit baskets & cookie baking.  Someone usually would stay back, usually an older grandmother or two who didn't want to make the trek into the bitter cold or "inclement" weather - they were the ones who "had everything ready" when we returned; the kettle steaming of hot chocolate, the trays of cookies and a roaring fire in the fireplace.  Yes! there was a fireplace in the "auxiliary building".   Someone also had prepared a (handmade) Pinata for the final activity of the evening.  We ALL took turns from youngest to oldest (adults included) to take one turn at bat.  Chaos erupted... as we all dove to get pieces of candy and nuts.

Oh, what fun!

I wish I had a better picture to show - to share of my memories better.  I wish I could make these memories the same, for my kids... maybe one day, we will.

****

Do you go caroling?  Have you ever considered going?  Bundle up.... let's go.  I'll go with you.
Here we come a caroling... among the leaves so green.

The Gift of a Cheerful Disposition...

.. .. .. . .. . ... . .... .. . .... .. . .. . .. ..  .. . . . . . .
Here we are.  Our last gift...
It's nice knowing there are things we can give away that can bless way more than a tangible, "costly" gift.  Amen?

I hope you enjoyed this mini series.  I had a lot of fun putting it together and am grateful for your patience and grace - while it SLOWLY came together.  See!  more gifts. :)
We're mid-week between Christmas and New Year - and the bulk of gift-giving, for most folks, is over... but I KNOW that true gift giving continues...

And, with this last one.  I truly HOPE it will continue.

The Gift of a Cheerful Disposition.

This is certainly one beautiful gift.  And, I had a hard time picking just one reference to share with you.  Because there are many, MANY friends and faces that come to mind... but, we'll go with this one.

I have a certain, favorite Mom and Pop type of gift shop that I like to frequent.  The thing is, I only recently discovered this store, though it's been around for a long, long time.
But what truly draws me to this store is absolutely not her "stuff" - although it sure helps, because,  I do LOVE what she has for sale.  I love her style.  The way she "decorates" her store... I love the old, uniqueness of the building...
The sights, the smells, the sounds...everything!!

However, do you know what it really is?
It is the shopkeeper's Cheerful Disposition that is what truly draws me in and keeps me coming back.
This woman is so friendly, amiable... very chatty - but heartfelt.  She's authentic.. even while sharing about hard times... she still has a smile!!
I appreciate that I don't feel like I have to purchase anything... rather, just being in her presence makes me feel so blessed.
I want to be like this - all the time - with everyone I meet.   Oh, to be known for a cheerful disposition!!

Proverbs 17:22 says,
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

The Gift of Solitude or Time...

 . .. .. . .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ... .... ... .. . .. . . . . .
Down to sharing two more gifts that don't cost you a cent!!  I was trying to get these in before Christmas - but, here we are.  On the Eve of Christmas... and I'm just getting to this second to last one now.  We can still give gifts after Christmas - right?

This gift is one I for sure - savor!!   I want to say it is one of my love languages... one where I feel the most loved.  Someone giving me the gift of time?   Ahhh! I love...
The Gift of Solitude or Time.

Are these two, time and solitude, the same thing?  Yes and No!

We often hear the phrase " to give of your time" is a valuable and valiant thing to do.  As you can guess, it happens on rare occasion for me.
I know I would appreciate that gift even more than I am already blessed with and by it.
But I do think that the Gift of Solitude is a really special thing.
However, I'm not too sure it can be given as much as it needs to be taken.
It's like solitude almost needs to be found or discovered.

Solitude is definitely a gift and yet if you don't have the time to enjoy it - is it really anything?

Let me tell you - if you ever find yourself in a moment of quiet, peaceful solitude... take a minute, or five, or ten and simply enjoy it.
It truly is a gift!!

Wishing you and yours a Quiet and Peace Filled Christmas!!

The Gift of Encouragement...

. .. .. .. .... . .. .. . ... . ... . .. .. ... . ... . . . . . . ..
So, yes! This gift feels closely related to the Gift of a Compliment, doesn't it?
I actually had to think about how to differentiate the two.
There isn't a whole lot of difference.

Now.  I thrive on encouragement.  I'm sure most of us do.  As well, this isn't something necessarily easy to do, either.  To encourage others.  But, we're called to do it.

I'm going to share a bit about my 9 year old son today.
Fourth grade has pretty much whipped his hyde.   He's doing fine... way more that he thinks he is, but he won't always hear it.  If you know what I mean?
He needs constant encouragement.  And on one tough night, recently, when I told him that he lights up like a Christmas Tree every time he receives a compliment (see, I told you the two go hand in hand. Compliments.  Encouragement.) - well, he didn't know if that was a good or bad thing.  So, then, I had to encourage him all over again - that, YES! - this is obviously a way that makes you feel loved.

Compliments.  Encouragement.  Words of Affirmation.
They all go hand in hand.

We all need daily doses and some of us need more than others.
Back to the whole compliment  side of things.  I'm serious.
Sometimes being told your appreciated is one of the simplest and most uplifting things you can ever hear.

I need to remember to encourage others as much as I know I need it myself.

**this photo was taken the night of Caleb's Winter Concert - with school.  He sang in the choir and ALMOST ranked up to play in the band. ;)  He plays 1st trumpet.  And, is doing fabulous... if I must say so myself.   I'm very proud of my boy!!!!

He loves to play it for everyone - and honestly, it is never a chore to get him to practice.  I can hardly complain of the "loudness" - but he gets it.  He's doing great.  I wish you could hear him play... unfortunately, the video (he asked me to make and to show all my friends... :)) wouldn't load for some reason.

The Gift of a Compliment...

. . .. .. . ... . ... .. . .. .. .. . ... .. . . . .. . ..  ..  . .
We all know the blessing of a well-rounded compliment - don't we?
It kinda fills our bucket...doesn't it?

I believe each one of my kids, in their kindergarten years, has come home from school with the story of how we need to be "bucket fillers" in each other's lives - not bucket dippers.
You know this story, too, don't you?

Well, today something interesting happened.

You know how every Christmas - outside of all the prominent retail stores you hear the familiar ringing of bells as the Salvation Army representative is sitting or standing there with their bucket - waiting.  Waiting to fill...

As I entered this particular store I didn't have anything at the moment to share, but I wanted to be sure to drop something in on my way out.

Now, this man, attending - was a jolly, friendly fellow wishing ALL, he saw, a Merry Christmas - but I also noticed he was not shy in speaking LIFE (compliments) to ALL he met, as well.  It wasn't awkward.  Rather, genuine.

When I came out of the store - I had my "gift" waiting and ready to add to his bucket - but, at the same time he caught my eye and filled mine.  In other words... he gave me a compliment - saying something about my smile being something really special and not to lose that.  Now, I've heard this compliment many, many times before and I'm not sharing this to brag - just saying... when someone "new" notices and it continues to be noticed - I sincerely hope that it continues to be a blessing!

I may or may not have have walked away with a tear in my eye... appreciating all over again the compliment that continues to remind me to wear my smile.  What's fun - is that it always catches me off guard - that someone will notice a simple smile and say something about it.  Maybe not enough people are doing it.  Smiling, that is.

Are you a bucket-filler, or a bucket-dipper?
Don't let others steal your joy - but rather give it away 1st - if you can!!

And, remember.  This is yet another gift that will not cost a single cent.

The Gift of a Written Note...

.. .. . .. ... . . .. .... .. . . .. . .. . ..... . . .. .. . . .
The kitchen table is strewn with cards. Both coming and going.  It's Christmas!  The time of year when the exchange of love and care is sent on it's way to loved ones far and near.
The names can be often hurriedly scribbled appearing as if to beat the mailman to the box - rushed - but "off - on their way" just the same...

Or... this.

And, it always amazes blesses me when the sender has taken the time to jot a few personal lines - handwritten thoughts of care and concern.  Thoughts of memories and moments they wanted to share.

It's a gift of the Written Note!!
One of my favs.

I'll admit - I struggle, at times, with taking specific care to share a few thoughts, more than my name.  Even if my name, and that of my family, is tidy and neat... sometimes a few more added (thoughtful) words are SOOOO important and are uniquely needed.  Maybe more than we'll ever know.

It is a gift.  Sharing and caring through pen and paper...
Something, I don't want to lose.

An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.  ~ Proverbs 12:25

Tell me.  Are you a card sender; a note-in-the-box kinda friend?

If you're anything like me, you love receiving this gift - way more than giving it... and I sure do like to give this sort of gift.  Though, I'm sure - I don't do it near enough.

The Gift of Laughter...

.. . .. . ... . .. ... . . .. . .. .. . .. . ... .. . . .. . . .
Ahhh... the sweet gift of laughter.
Now, I KNOW I have talked about this before.... that laughter - as in, the easy roll-from-the gut sort of laughter does not come easy for me.   :(

I do like this gift.  Because when it happens... it sure feels good.   I have kiddos' that laugh really, really easily, especially Jayne - which I love!!! It makes me chuckle to hear it flow so easily for them.   In other words  - it blesses me. :)

As in, that is my style of laughing... I chuckle silently; simply snickering or smiling...

I am blessed to have a husband, that keep me laughing, as well as, other friends, which is so welcomed.
Oh, how I need them ALL in  my life.

You know when and where there is a deep-seated JOY in one's life... there is great peace.
And we know a peaceful heart gives life to the body.

I know that - because of that - it is when laughter naturally spills out.

Laughter is the best medicine...for ourselves and for others.  Amen??

The Gift of Affection...

.. .. . .. .. .... .. . ... .. . ... . ..... .. .. . .. . .. . .  ..... .
Are you a naturally affectionate sort of person?  Good for you!!  I struggle in this area... and in particular when my kiddos' beg for a dog... it's simply not in me!!

Affection.  A trait I wish I was gifted in.

Every year - at Christmastime - I pull out the decorations and out comes this book...The Tall Book of Christmas!   One of my favs.

There is one story in here that is a must-read for my little family.  It chokes me up, each time - I read.  Which, on one hand, surprises even me.   Obviously - affection is a gift!!

I thought I would share part of this story with you here today... as a way to share in this gift of affection.
You may have heard of the children's story called;  The Puppy who Wanted a Boy, by Catherine Woolley.

I'll simply paraphrase the story, just a bit...

It's a sweet story of a puppy, named Petey, who wanted nothing more than a boy for Christmas.  He was a good puppy that year - well, sorta.  He only frightened the cat a little and he only chewed on a shoe a teeny-weeny... but his mother said alright.  She guessed he could have one and she would look for a boy!!
When there were simply no boys to be found...
Petey decided that other gifts offered by his mother would simply not do.
He had to have a boy.

He decided to venture out on his own.  He had to find a boy.  Perhaps another dog would give up his boy for Petey.
But when Petey politely asked the collie, who's boy was riding a bicycle, if he would give up his boy - the collie dreadfully growled he definitely didn't want to.

Next he saw a Setter playing ball with his boy.  Then a Scotty carrying a package, for his.  "Oh, if only I had a boy to play ball with or to carry a package for.." thought Petey.  Yet, for each dog he found he mustered up the courage to ask if they would be willing to give up their boy - and each one would answer... "NO!" - they definitely didn't.

Where would Petey find a Boy?  His tail fell limp.  His ears began to droop.  He was so tired from looking e v e r y w h e r e...
Mother was right.  There were no boys to be had.

As he heads home, that Christmas Eve, and on the way at the very edge of town... He sees a sign hanging over a door. that reads.

Orphans' Home

Knowing what orphans are (for they are children who have no dog to take care of them) Petey decides to see if there were any boys here...
He pads slowly up the sidewalk barely able to put one paw in front of the other.
He stops because he hears music.  Looking through the window he sees a lighted Christmas Tree and children singing carols.

But, here... sitting on the porch... he sees a boy, looking all sad and lonely.  Petey forgets about being tired.  He leaps onto the boy's lap and wiggle-wag goes his tail.  Licking the boy with his warm, wet tongue...
How glad the boy was to see Petey!  He puts both arms around the little dog and hugs him tight.

All of a sudden the front door to the Orphans' Home opens and a lovely lady calls for Dickie, the boy, to come on inside to the Christmas Tree...

Dickie looks up at the lady and says, "I've got a puppy.  Can he come, too?"

Of course he can...

Before Petey knows it - he is inside - and the crowd of boys who were playing around the tree all rushed at Petey.  They all wanted to pick him up.  They all wanted to pet him.
Petey simply wags his tail and his fat little body is frisking about... kissing every boy who came near.

"Can he stay?" the boys asked.
"Yes," said the lady. "He may stay."

"Come on, puppy." Dickie said, "Get your supper."
"We'll fix you a nice warm bed!" cried another boy.
"We'll play games with you." said a third.

"Who ever would think." said Petey to himself, "that I would get fifty boys for Christmas!"

***
Ahh...this story... the epitome of affection.  Everything I am not and all that I want to be!
I can't say - "I want a dog."  I KNOW my kids, do - especially my eight year old daughter.  I just wonder if I could or would have the same response as the Lovely Lady... for she is who I would want to be.  She is who I like to think I am... saying "yes!" But sadly... well, I am ..uhhh... and, I think you know what I'm going to say...

All that to say - it really is a heartwarming story... full of dreams, desire and discovery all garnered through means of... affection.  Can we say it delivered?

The Gift of Listening...

. .. . .. .. ... .. ... .. .. . .. . .. .. . .. .. .. . ..  .. . .

To fully give someone a listening ear is the best thing someone can do for another.  It's not easy to stop and always give someone the full, apt attention they need, or that they're asking for.

As a mom... this following quote-for-thought has given me pause.

Do you listen to understand?  Or, do you listen to reply?

I can remember my youngest - Jayne - a couple of years ago.  Imagine, the baby, seeking to "be heard" amongst everyone else's chatter and clamoring...
She'd be sitting on my lap and would try to be telling me something... then, because I wasn't listening, she would take her chubby little hands and grab my face - turning my whole head towards her own... so that I would really have to LISTEN to her!!
(smile)

I can remember on more than one occasion my own "demand" for a listening ear.  I had a dear friend who would willingly take hours into the night, sometimes, just to listen...to me ramble and pine and dream...
It was a season, for sure.  One that didn't last forever.  And yet, I'm sure that I took way more of her time than necessary.

But, she had a gift.  The gift of listening...
Her friendship was dear.  And, still is.
It's something I'll never forget.  A blessing I'll cherish long into forever!

I do want to be this "gift" to someone else.
Willing and ready to set life aside; to truly listen to someone - with where they're at.  With kind understanding.  Listening with questions that draws them out even more...
Obviously, for this mom, this starts at home!!

In all of that, though, the above mentioned quote - reminds me of how and where I need or want to grow.  I realize I reply to readily... and am not patiently listening.

I'm so quick to be thinking of a reply - my reply - while someone else is talking - that I really miss what they are saying.  It's humbling to have to go back (within seconds of the conversation) and say, "I'm sorry - what did you just say?"   I've done this on more than one occasion...
I have so much room to grow...

**
So - this Christmas Season... with this Gift of Listening...
To master this...what do you say we slow down and really turn our gaze to the one who truly LISTENS!  I know I need His help.

Listen to what the psalmist David says in Psalm 5:1-3...

Give ear to my words, O Lord,
consider my sighing.
Listen to my cry for help.
my King and my God,
for to you I pray.
In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice;
in the morning I lay my requests before you
and wait in expectation.

The Psalms are full of examples of prayer and petition... to the Lord.  Here's another, of David's words, found in

Psalm 27: 7-9
Hear my voice when I call, O Lord;
be merciful to me and answer me.
My heart says of you, "Seek his face!"
Your face, Lord, I will seek.
Do not hide your face from me, do not turn your servant away in anger;
you have been my helper.
Do not reject me or forsake me,
O God my Saviour.

Oh friends...in JESUS, we have the greatest example; the Gift of Listening!!!

Doesn't that give you such peace?
**On a side note...
Have you ever stood outside on a snowy night and truly took in the quiet of the moment.  Snow softly falling.  If you hold your breath, pause.. and truly listen.  I promise, you can almost hear those snowflakes falling...one right after another.

That too is such a gift.  Try it sometime, you'll see... it stills you and all is right with the world!!

Eight Gifts That Do Not Cost You a Cent!! {mini series}

. .. . .. .. . .. . ... . .. . . .. .. . . .. .. .. .... .. . .  .
Hello Friends... are you ready?  Christmas Time's a Comin'.  The season we all love...of gift-giving, celebration, family and friends and yummy food!  Of course, Jesus is the REAL reason for the season (the Greatest Gift) and I don't say that lightly.
 He is mine for sure...

I got to thinking what this particular season may look like for our little family.  Our kids all know that Christmas will be a little "light" this year, in terms of (tangible) gift-giving, simply due to the fact that we're wanting to buy a house.  It makes it easier to explain all of that, and abide by it- since we're all a part of the impending decision. :)
It also marks one year that our landlord passed away... which adds its own dimension in and of itself.  It's now a season with even more (raw) mixed emotions and change... but God is so good!!

In the past - here on the ole blog - I had a couple of meme's that I would do for and throughout the month of December.  One year was of sharing favorite Yuletide Carols (2013), another was the December Photo Project (2011)...or, of course there were favorite Holiday cookies sprinkled throughout.   Do you remember any of those?  lol..

This year, I thought I would dust off the old keyboard and share my thoughts regarding Eight Gifts that don't cost a thing!!

Not one single cent.

So, over the next couple of weeks - hopefully, I can keep up and get them all in before Christmas - I'll be posting a little more often (smile), as I share these eight different gifts that have made a difference either in my life or that can be given to bless someone else for this Christmas-time of year!!

Do you want to know what these gifts are?

1. The Gift of Listening
2. The Gift of Affection
3. The Gift of Laughter
4. The Gift of a Written Note
5. The Gift of a Compliment
6. The Gift of Encouragement
7. The Gift of Solitude or Time
8. The Gift of a Cheerful Disposition

***

So, do you think you'll join me - as we reflect on this gift-giving season? ** these may or may not be coming to you in this order...

Perhaps, you can think of a few gifts yourself - that won't be costing you a cent.
I would like to hear your thoughts..

To him that gives generously... He himself will be refreshed.
~ Proverbs 11: 24-25 (paraphrased)

HAPPY 1st DAY of DECEMBER!!

Long Line of Love + Giveaway!

.. .. .. ... .. .. .. .. .. . .. . .. ... . ... .. . .. . . . . . . ..
It's not too often that I have a blog title come to me before a post is actually written. But, that's what has happened with these words here today.

If you know anything about me and my story and our current family's situation...you can conclude that I don't favor to change(s) very well.

A lot has been happening the past few months that can almost reflect the bitter cold of the outdoors.  That's only true, right now, because of the arctic chill that has come down and settled in over our region.
And we're anticipating a lot more changes rising high on the horizon.
We know the why - but there is no telling when or how they'll come about.

Not all the changes happening around here are terrible, though.  They are changes just the same.  They stiffen.  Hold us back- till we "warm up" to the idea. It's okay!
They rattle.  They upheave - till it settles back down and we're ready to "ride out the wave" the rest of the way.  Going with the flow.

But when one starts to look for the color that love brings; the cheer in the dark and hardened places... because, it is there!... it really can revive and bring life and meaning back into the stone-cold heart.

What can crack that for you?

What brings that life-blood pumping again - for you?

What warms that ole heart of yours?

Are you longing for some color - crystal clear - in your darkened world?

***
Walk with me for a minute through this "cold and blustery" morning.  The sun is shining - yes!! and the sky is bright and gorgeous blue!  Icicles hang on and low - line upon line.
I look for them.  Nestled in here and there.
They make me smile!!

They remind me of the warmth of God's love melting.....forming...shaping...the cold into something new!!
Ooohh, what's this?  I see my kids names etched in the snowbank - line upon line - all in a row.

Fun!!

Enter indoors - it's time for a warming-up, kind of cup of coffee (and soon some lunch, boasting one of my favorite condiments... pickled beets!!) and my eyes scan the dining room table.  Leftover bits of paper-heart making is strewn all over... my heart swells just a tad fuller as I see handwritten love notes from my four and seven year old.  With that I hardly see the mess.

Together we clean up the pieces and somehow the heart seems willing (You know, this isn't always the easiest of chores - to clean up after the fun is done!)... I can't believe it!!
Where is the easy button?

Has their hearts melted somewhat, somehow, too?  Changes...

I know.  We've been praying this prayer lately.
Create in me a clean heart, oh God!  And renew a right spirit within me...
Well.  He's obviously doing this.  In all of our hearts...
***
On the heater... I see more hearts laid out, lined up, all in a row... my seven year thought to do this to dry ALL THE GLUE needed to layer these valentines... which she used entirely way too much glue, was my first thought, and I wanted to scold.  But in the end - this was her creativity in full swing and I decided if I'm to continue to "build my home" the way I know I want to then I need to let it go!

Let my love grow... and use WAY more encouragement and praise than ever before!

You see - I know I've come from a long line of love.
Why... out of the blue this potted plant from my mom - who stopped by on a whim!
Really?  No... it's because she loves...and to say, I'm thinking of you.
Happy Valentine's Day!!

As I have been loved so I must love you!

Which reminds me.

How about a GIVEAWAY today?

I've been reading this book... slowly but sure.  And even passed it on to a friend or two, to borrow...

Love Walked Among Us, by Paul E. Miller.
Can I just say....It's amazing!

This love is Jesus and in a very practical way - teaches us how to love like he loves!!

I do have to tell you the book I give today is a bit tattered. Loved on.  "Gently used", you might say - because it is my own copy. However, I just want to bless you with this quietly compelling and encouraging read.  Your comment today - will allow you a chance to win this wonderful book as my giveaway today... simple as that.

The winner of this giveaway will be declared and notified, sometime next week!
Until then... seek to see some color in your world today?  Can you?

Do you know you're from a long line of love?

Just as I am ~ for 2016

.. .. ... .. . ... ... .. .. ... . .. . .. . .. . .. . . . .
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.  Psalm 119:105

Resolutions!
And so 2016 begins with thoughts and wishes for all things new!  Heart-changes.  Last year was full enough of unsolicited change... some really hard changes... as a matter of fact.  Ones we hope to not ever have to face again.  Some changes were good, right and helpful.  Wonderful blessings!
But we have no idea what this year will bring.

I resolve in my heart to walk through this coming year with grace, by my side!

I have been pondering several things... here of late. Things like: How might I tangibly walk this road with a God-fearing confidence?

One thing I know, I cannot do this by myself!  This can never be of a confidence in and of myself.

I fully need the aide of the Holy Spirit and his comforting hand to guide and lead...

One of my greatest desires is to grow in the Word! Always has been.
Recently, I've been given a tangible and practicable way, or idea, in doing this.  So my plan is to handwrite scripture verses out on paper, on a daily, regular basis.

Now - the question is... which and whose plan will I want to use to follow? :)

There are several out there, such as...

Sweet to the Soul - Soul deep in God's Word!

Or, another found through Facebook (a closed facebook group where you'll need to sign up for) - via a friend of mine.
Write His Word

Or, another from Sweet Blessings.

I'm sure there are many others to choose from.  Check them out!

In the meantime.. my prayer for 2016 comes through the touching lyrics of this well-known and dearly loved hymn.  Just as I am!

I pray these words will minister to your heart as well, as they do mine.
To come... simply come... just as I am!

I am thankful for each one of you - my readers!  And without you - blogging wouldn't be as much fun, now would it?

**I'm linking today's post with Finding the Grace Within | Tuesday @ Ten.  The prompt this week was : I resolve to...

Looking forward to what the rest of this New Year will bring!! And, especially looking forward to spending the rest of this day - with dear fremily! :)

Have a Happy New Year - Day!

Christmas Blessing

. ... .... . .. .. . .... . .. ... ... . .. ... . .. .. . .  . ..

***
It's a quiet here, this evening.  The lights are low and twinkling on the little Charlie Brown.
The littles are (soon) sound asleep... ;)
The kitchen is cleaned up after a quick and hurried dinner and from the whirlwind and flurry of cookie baking during the day.
The cards are sent and we're enjoying the ones that trickle in through our door.
It's time to "wrap up" the shopping and begin the gift-wrapping and any other last minute details... that still need to be tended to.

Not forgetting the reason for the season, in the least.

So far, we've enjoyed caroling...crafting...
get-togethers...
and a Charles Dickens play/production... of the "Christmas Carol".
With more activity still to come.

We're also wishing, so badly, for some snowflakes to land our way...
That'd be really nice!!

In time.  They'll come...
~
Knowing this was coming, but never being fully prepared...
Our hearts are heavy.  The last day and a half have found us thinking of more the celebration of heaven than anything else.  Our landlord, Mr. A has entered his eternal home!  We're sad, but happy that he is free of any pain and suffering anymore.
This man - our friend - will be greatly missed.
We're grateful, we got to visit with him as much as we have.

This could also mean some really big changes for our family, in the upcoming year!
In fact, it will.

We thank you for your thoughts and prayers, in this regard.

I'll leave you tonight with this Christmas Blessing!

“Let Every Day Be Christmas”

Christmas is forever, not for just one day,
for loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away
like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.
The good you do for others is good you do yourself.

Peace on Earth, good will to men,
kind thoughts and words of cheer,
are things we should use often
and not just once a year.

Remember too the Christ-child, grew up to be a man;
to hide him in a cradle, is not our dear Lord’s plan.
So keep the Christmas spirit, share it with others far and near,
from week to week and month to month, throughout the entire year!

Joy is never perfect!

.. .. . .... .. . .. . ... . .... ... ... .. ... . .. . . . .. . . ..

Yesterday, I decided I wanted to add a little touch of JOY to a corner of my kitchen.

Pulling out an old barn board, from when we visited Kaitlin and her family, back in April, was just the piece I needed...
I threw some white paint on there and handpainted the letters.  Not perfectly.

Joy is never perfect!
But how it results... is!

I like how this piece adds its touch to brighten our little corner of the kitchen.

But what I like even more... is this.

Jesus and Others and You!
What a wonderful way to spell JOY!
Jesus and Others and You.
In the life of each girl and each boy.
J is for Jesus, for he has first place.
O is for others we meet face to face.
Y is for you. And, for all that you do,
Put yourself last and spell JOY!

A reminder for me, my children, for us...
as a family!!

May JOY brighten the corners of your heart and home this Christmas!

Living the Life | Salt of the Earth

. .. .... .. .. . ... .  .. . ... . .. . . .. . . . .. . ... . . .
In anticipation of the season to come, gift-giving is obviously on the mind.  We've just come from a season of giving thanks - to what we now think of as a season of giving gifts.

Please enjoy this lengthy excerpt (I know..) and may it be something for us all to consider.  For certainly all of us have room enough, to grow, in our hearts, of putting ourselves aside and to think of others...instead.
Even if it requires more than the usual bout of sacrifice, which we may already graciously give!

At the busy intersection of Ginza and Z streets in downtown Tokyo was a small wooden box fastened to a post.  The box, like a neatly built birdhouse, had a slot underneath it's slanted roof and miniature door in the lower right hand corner.  At intervals during day or night, people would open the tiny door and take out several coins.  Then they would shuffle off into the crowd.

At least once a day a well-dressed Japanese gentleman dropped coins or paper yen into the slot beneath the slanted roof.  Without glancing to the right or left he, too, disappeared.

This "give-and-take" caught the imagination of hundreds of Japanese.  They called it the "Salt of the Earth" movement, a unique adventure in anonymous charity.

It began on September 10, 1956, when 46 year old Shinichi Eguchi nailed the first box to a light-post near the Hagoromo Bridge in Chiba city, a Tokyo suburb.  Eguchi, who wrote inspirational verse, was convinced that the most worthwhile line he ever composed was the one on that first box,

"Whoever is truly in need is free to help himself to the money inside".

A desperate man gave Eguchi the idea for the venture.  The man had told Eguchi that life had dealt him so many bad breaks that he was determined to kill himself and his family of five.  Eguchi responded by getting the man a job and moving this man and his family into his own home.  The wages the man earned, however, were so inadequate for his family that his eldest daughter, aged 15, became a prostitute.  When Eguchi heard of this he blamed himself for not having done more for this family.  Poverty, he declared, is everyone's sin and everybody's responsibility.  He vowed that he would give 1,000 yen (about $3 a day) to charity for the rest of his life.

He recalled a legend about a money box in the Swiss Alps, in which villagers claimed was watched over by the Lord.  People put money into the box to help the poor, who took out what they needed and without abusing the privilege.  When things were better with those who had been aided, they sometimes replaced what they had taken.  But the donations always exceeded the demand.  Even thieves never pilfered the box and everyone in the village became more generous and brotherly-minded because of it.

This story of the Swiss Money Box became associated in Eguchi's mind along with a Scripture passage he had learned as a boy - when he had first become a Christian.  "Ye are the salt of the earth, but if the salt hath lost his savor, wherewith shall it be salted?"  And thus began his ministry...

Eguchi converted a discarded milk box into a "Salt of the Earth" box and wrote on it a message to the needy.  He fastened it to a post near the Hagoromo Bridge.

As he was "salting" this first box with a handful of yen, an official came along and asked what was going on.  When Eguchi explained, the official thought it preposterous, but to show good will he too dropped some money into the box.

During the first six months, the boxes were destroyed fourteen times.  Sometimes it was juvenile vandalism but often adults wrecked the boxes - just the same.  Eguchi took these setbacks as a test of faith and kept replacing the boxes.

One day Eguchi found a scribbled note in the box from an unemployed laborer.  The laborer had said that at one point he contemplated suicide but that the box  had made him change his mind.

Later other notes appeared.

One woman wrote that the few yen she had taken had kept her family from starvation.  A thief confessed that he had been on his way to rob a house, but as he was about to take some money from the box, it seemed he heard a voice.  Withdrawing his empty hand he decided to go straight.  Later, when he was helped by a friend to find an honest job he gave credit to the "Salt-of-the-Earth".

One day a well-to-do merchant, who had often seen poet Eguchi "salt" the box, decided that he too would like to put up a box of his own.  Inquiring how to proceed, he was told that there were no rules governing the size or construction of the box or where it should be placed.  However, there was but one requirement: whoever put up a box would have to promise that they or an associate would place some money in it  every day.

Readily agreeing, the merchant installed his box.  When a typhoon struck Tokyo and hardly anyone dared venture out, a policeman spied the merchant fighting his way against the roaring wind to put money in the box.  This so impressed the policeman that he, too, set up a box in a different section of the city.

Eguchi began publishing a small bulletin for free distribution, placed in a receptacle beneath each box.  The four-page pamphlet contained testimonials, essays on the power of faith, and poetry.  One issue carried these lines: "Wounded pilgrim, take help from this box; Rich or poor, wounded traveler be filled from this box.  Be filled."

Eguchi eventually distributed over 14,000 copies of the bulletins each month and placed an additional 6,000 under the boxes at his own expense.  Publishing the bulletin and supporting the boxes was such a drain that Eguchi frequently pawned personal belongings to keep his "pact with the Lord."  His wife and two sons, aged 13 and 19, cooperated with him in the adventure.

The movement grew and soon there were over four-hundred "Salt of the Earth" boxes in Japan, along with others scattered throughout the United States, placed there by tourists who learned about the movement in Japan.

"When you join the 'Salt of the Earth' movement," said Eguchi, "you are uniting with an unseen fellowship.  A person who makes and supports a box becomes a changed person.  In the past if he had been reluctant to trust people he begins to have faith.  If he has been tyrannical, he mellows.  If he has been idle, he becomes industrious.  The greatest mission of the the boxes is in the new outlook on life they bring to the donors and receivers alike."

Changes took place in others, too.  One Japanese townsman testified that he used to spit at the box whenever he passed by.  But he became so impressed by the loyalty of the man who kept the box "salted" that he constructed a box of his own and pledged to support it.

Eguchi's theory was that a person should give and then forget about the gift.  "We should not mind," the poet insisted, "if a hoodlum takes money out of a box to use it for his alcoholic merrymaking.  No one ever knows what the final outcome may be."

In another issue of one of Eguchi's bulletins, he shared a story of a drunkard who confessed he had been taking coins from the box for drink.  One morning, however, his conscience bothered him so much that he put some yen into the box instead.  This act of restitution so filled him with self-respect that he decided to stop drinking.

Shinichi Eguchi felt that any hard-and-fast organization would rob the program of its selfless spirit. So the project had no president, no directors and no one to solicit contributions.

"What we are trying to do," Eguchi said, "is get a box in every village and city in our country.  Then we can dare approach and challenge other nations.  And only when every nation is inspired by selfless love and service will the true meaning of the 'Salt of the Earth' program be realized.  It is not merely a matter of giving the money - it is, the most of all, a matter of living the life."

I've never seen a box like this in real-life!  I'd be curious if anyone reading here, has... or perhaps you know of something similar - in action.

Father in Heaven, We Thank Thee

. ... .. .. ... .. .. . .... ... .. .. ... .. ... ... .. . . .. . .

We're spending a quiet day at home today - just our family, and we're thankful for that!  With hopes and plans for gathering as a larger family - on Sunday.

We have so much to be thankful for!  If I could only begin to count my blessings!!!
This simple prayer came to mind today, as I think of Thanksgiving Day - and all that means for me!

We Thank Thee
by Ralph Waldo Emerson

For flowers that bloom about our feet,
Father, we thank Thee.
For tender grass so fresh, so sweet,
Father, we thank Thee.

For the song of bird and hum of bee,
For all things fair we hear or see,
Father in heaven, we thank Thee.

For blue of stream and blue of sky,
Father, we thank Thee.
For pleasant shade of branches high,
Father, we thank Thee.

For fragrant air and cooling breeze,
For beauty of the blooming trees,
Father in heaven, we thank Thee.

For this new morning with its light,
Father, we thank Thee.
For rest and shelter of the night,
Father, we thank Thee

Pumpkin Dip

For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends,
Father in heaven, we thank Thee.

Amen!

Enjoy your family and friends today!  And remember, if you think thanks... you'll live thanks!
Count your Blessings!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

I just thought I would close this post by sharing with you this simple recipe for Pumpkin Dip.  Something for you and yours to enjoy over this holiday season...

:: Pumpkin Dip for Gingersnaps ::

4 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cup heavy whipping cream
3/4 cup pumpkin (canned)
2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spices (combo of cinnamon, cloves and allspice)
1 Tablespoon maple syrup

gingersnaps

Using an electric mixer, whip together the cream cheese, powdered sugar and heavy whipping cream for about 2-3 minutes.
Add the pumpkin, spices and maple syrup - whip again for 2-3 minutes (the longer you whip, the more fluffy it becomes).
Add a drizzle of maple syrup and crushed gingersnaps crumbs on top for looks.  Dip with gingersnaps or apple slices.

* I've also found this dip to be a delicious topping for pancakes or waffles.. enjoy!!!
