I wonder...

  . . .. .... ... .. ..... .. .... ... ... .... .. .. .. .. . . ..

What if you have been praying and praying for something to change and in your heart you know that what you decide is really going to shake things up.  Can you relate to this?  Let me ask this...

Have you ever been truly misunderstood, before?  If so.  Did you expect it to happen, or did it come as a shock, to you?  How did it make you feel?

I can remember three specific times, in my lifetime - where I knew it was going to probably happen.  I also knew I would have to be okay with the fact that people (mostly close friends and family) were not going to understand me; that, they weren't too sure - what I was up to...and why?   "Why in the world would Bevy ever rock the boat?"... I know, was the question.  It wasn't my nature.  I wasn't the type.  People liked me for who I was.  They were comfortable.  Why change - anything?  I remember reassuring myself and resolving myself to this... it truly was going to be okay.

Here are those three specific moments...

1. When I parted with the conservative, Mennonite church over 20 years ago.  Don't get me wrong.  I appreciate my godly heritage...and, I STILL love Jesus with my whole heart - he's ALL that matters! Truly.

2. When I met my hubby online through eHarmony.  BTW: We've been happily married now for 15 years and have three beautiful blessings to wrap our hearts and arms around. We love our kids!!

3. When I started my own home-based, business - in health and wellness, little over 5 years ago.  Little did I know - that THIS was going to be SOOOO AMAZING!!  Not sure which is better - the opportunity or the products!?!  They truly go hand in hand.

Being misunderstood; was it easy, for me?  No!  But, each time I chose to stand strong in where I knew God was leading me.  And... EACH decision... has been life-changing; life-enriching, for me, as well.  I'm sure life will be filled with more of these times of misunderstandings - as time moves on.  It's sort of the nature of life.  However, I'm #sograteful for each of these times in my life, being part of my story. :)

My biggest takeaway and one that I want to encourage you to consider, is this:  Don't shy away from something you know is most likely to be an answer to the prayers of your heart.  I often wonder, what if I had said "NO!!!" and kept to my comfort zone... I wonder where I'd truly be today?

Would that be the same for you??

Ordinary

. . .. ... .... .. ... .... .... ... ... . ... . .. .. ... . ..
Your ordinary, real, everyday....
is the best gift you have.
Don’t miss it.

I sit here thinking what it must be like for an acquaintance friend of mine, a mother to 5 or 6, to rather recently "lose" her spouse... she's grieving today - but he is safely HOME!!

For another - the news reels dictate a change in weather patterns, "later tonight!",  that could ultimately change everything for their week away.  But as of today, this moment, the sun is currently shining hot and bright!!

Our circumstances can change as fickle as the weather - but as sure and as certain as death.

Dear reader, did you know that your friends and family are waiting on the hope your story can bring?  Oh, it's beautiful.  Why does it have to be perfect?  Why is the "fear of man" rising up?  It shouldn't.  Be brave.  Be courageous.  Don't withhold!

Tell your story!

The nitty-gritty of your each and every day could be a game-changer; a life-changing moment, for that certain someone who is following in your shadow.

Proverbs 3:27-28   ---  Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.  Do not say to your neighbor, "Come back later, I'll give it tomorrow" -- when you now have it with you.

Determine to make this ordinary come alive with a little extra!!  Make it extraordinary... but, keep it real.  Because - it is!!

May your day be blessed and filled with hope!!

fmf | place (what if...)

.. .. .... ... .. ... ... .... .. .. ... .. . .... .. .. .. . . .

I realize this favorite phrase of mine - is also a place where many of us dwell but not to many take the leap from.   Would you ponder this with me, today?  What if...

What if...You didn't always have to feel that sickness come on for that oh-so long and oh-so often amount of time?
What if... YOU were the one to feel stronger, feel better and able to smile again?
What if...you prayed and this was your answer?
What if...you could dream again?   This time, BIGGER!!
What if...you thought you were to go here or there and do this or that...but instead, THIS!  This is your place and you fit!!
What if...you decide instead that you are totally worth it - not your things or your stuff... but YOU!

Listen, friend.  I want to tell you something.
All of these  things used to be my "what if's" and now they are my reality.  What if the change you see in me -- could be the change you see in you?

I offer #hope!  A #solution.  There is so much potential.

There is a time and a place to pay attention.

fmf | What IF I told you a story of happy feet and how they got there?

.. .. ... .... ..... .... .... .. .... ..... ..... .. ... ... .. .

This photo prompts a post all its own.

***
They're a bit in hiding... but, today I wanted to share a story about my feet.  Yup!!  You read that right.  My feet.

A couple of years ago, May of 2015, to be exact, I was invited to attend a small health and wellness presentation held at the home of a dear friend.  About 8 months, or so, prior... I had first heard about these particular amazing health supplements by way of a packet of information and testimonials.  I wasn't skeptical, per say, but rather intrigued.  I wondered, How could these couple of products help or relieve so many various and different symptoms?  So, now that I had heard about this... but, truly forgetting about it...due to life and months gone by, of this packet being buried under other stuff in my bedside table, the invitation to attend and completely being curious, was compelling.  It wasn't hard to RSVP with a "yes"!  I was eager to learn!
First off, the gal, who was sharing was a Naturopathic Doctor.  And, she had me at "hello"!  Meaning, her story alone... sold me!  But, there was so much more.   Nothing magic, of course!!  Simply learning about things I had never put a name too - but was personally dealing with - were  now finally being explained and I was so grateful.   She explained in detail the woes of Candida (gut health) - wreaking havoc on and in our bodies; the importance of reducing Inflammation; and, what it means to have a balanced Glucose Metabolism.  Ya'll!!  I had no idea.  I had never heard of some of these words... but, boy!!  Did these "root issues" ever have their grip on me.  So, many people were coming to mind, as I sat and listened.  I realized everyone and anyone who has guts needed to hear about this.

One of those things I was dealing with - for a very L.O.N.G. time - were Plantar Warts, on my feet.  Bingo!!!  Candida.  Plantar Warts.... are/were some of the most painful things I have ever had to deal with.  Some days to the point where I couldn't walk around the house.  Socks hurt.  If I had to go anywhere... I wore bedroom slippers.  (Talk about embarrassing!)

You know how the Apostle Paul talks about that "thorn in his side"...?  Yeah - well, that was mine.
What excited me that evening was learning - that I had hope!!

Hope, again, to feel better, in this area.
Oh, it wasn't going to happen overnight.  No way!!  (remember I said, no magic here!)  This was not going to be a quick fix.   But - if I chose to take my health seriously and realize it as being an investment... not looking at "this plan" as being an expense... I could truly see some light at the end of the tunnel.  I was TOTALLY worth it.  Was this going to be hard work?  Yes.  Was I going to be committed?  I had to ask myself that.  The thing was.  NO ONE pressured us to give these products a try.  No one!!  They only said... "if you decide to give these products a try, you are going to be so grateful".   It was the conviction with which they spoke.  They had been there... and had seen it for themselves.  We left that night to "sleep on it" and pray...
Thankfully, my hubby was on board - willing to, at least, give it a try!   We had 60 days - or we could get our money back.  Which he was secretly planning to do - because... if this was like anything else in our past, it wasn't going to work.  He was going to "pull the plug", as soon as he could.

Truth was.  In little time, things were working.  There were changes.  Unexpected changes.
Exciting changes!!!  Little bits at a time... but changes, nonetheless, in the right direction.

My hubby had a different reason...for starting. However, my goal was to do this until my feet felt happy!
Oh, I knew this was going to take "forever".  A month for every year I dealt with my issue, at best.  But... I was MAD enough, about it, to be Motivated.  To take Action.  And, I had Decided... this area in my health needed to change.

You've all heard the little quip.
You can't spell Challenge without Change.

Well, in order to see change - I had to take on the challenge.

***
Fast forward.  Here we are three (plus) years later... still going strong.  Obviously, the plug was not pulled.  Our lives were being changed.  So were many others.  Our friends and family who, at the time, were watching us - have since joined us and now they're seeing and loving these life- changing results, as well.   Everybody has a different story.  And, while similar, there are always different outcomes.  Which is really, really cool!  Our bodies are fearfully and wonderfully made.

My hubby saw his goal fulfilled.... something he had never seen before in other "side hustles"... that he had tried.    And, my feet?

Well, that evening... with the Naturopathic Doctor explaining everything... I was told that the feet are the last to "be addressed"... that there was going to be a lot of detox happening in between.  What?!?!  Truthfully, by now, I didn't care.  I was ready.

Of course.. truth be told.  She was right!!  Just now... three (plus) years later... I can tell you that my feet are happy.  NOT PERFECT!  I am sure I still have a bit of ways to go.  But, to go from hard, HARD calloused, shoe-leather like feet - with painful, pinhead warts... shooting pains with every step... to that feeling of soft and pliable (I mean, I rub my feet together and I'm experiencing new "sensations"; of things I haven't felt in my feet in a long while) and while there are a few spots here and there... it is nothing like ever before.  I almost do not know what to think.   I am so happy!!

You ask.  All by simply and consistently addressing gut health, reducing inflammation and balancing blood sugar...?  Yes!!!  Consistency is key!!  You may wonder if I did anything else, to help?
Yes...I did.
I would often soak my feet in Epsom salt water, with ACV and sometimes essential oils.  (mostly that was for relief... from and while going through some of  my painful times).  Lots of lotions and creams... I tried everything.  Some things helped and other things didn't.

Do you know what, though?   Between my hubby, the kiddos and myself...the list of things that were addressed, alleviated or helped - from day one, of starting these products - till now... is significant!!  I knew we ALL needed these products, as a family.   The feet, for me, is simply just one area...

Connect with me in the comments - if you would like to hear more.

Can I just say... I love my happy feet!!
You have to realize this really and truly is a BIG deal, for me.   It makes me tear up!!  And, if you know me well, at all, you know I do cry easily, but... this has been life-changing for me.   I'm so, so grateful to have finally found something that works.  It truly continues to be a health journey for me.  I often wonder what would have happened IF I had not said yes.

I, also, honestly wonder how many other people are longing for hope in their health. I'm sure I'm not the only one.  Whether its you or someone you know... people are starting to wake up and recognize their need for a change to be had.  Let me encourage you.
If you are one of those left wondering if there is any hope for you...
there is!!  What if.  What if... this could change everything for you?  It's a good question.  Have you ever thought about this... How much is your health worth to you?  Its truly something to think about.

These feet are meant for walking!!!  The journey continues...with or without you.

Dear Me {a letter to my past self}

. .. .. . . .... .. . .. ... . .. . . .. .. .. . .. .. . .. . . .. . . ..  ..

Dear Me...

I don't know if I've ever done this before.  Write a letter to the past-me- pre marriage and children!!
In case you're wondering...Dear Me... this isn't going to be easy, you know. Telling you like it is.
As I sit here to ponder this quest...going back in time...to encourage and build you up (because, I have a sinking feeling you'll need this and don't ask me how I know... ahem). there are so many places I could go with this letter.

Let's just settle on this one special area.  Mothering!!

Do you know that one day there will be two little girl-you's - a.k.a. Mini-Me's that will rattle your cage, shake you to the core, bring you to your knees and so much more.  Now, I know that sounds all rhymey and stuff - but it's true!  They are going to watch you like hawks.  And, want to do what you do, all of the time and be just like you - in every way. (ie; using your camera, bake up a storm, hang the laundry, take over the vacuuming, etc.)  Your son will pretty much do and be the same.
One will be teachable; semi-compliant.  The other will be stubborn and strong.  And - then - unexpectedly, outta the blue, they'll switch it all up and take on the opposite.  Leaving you feeling more confused than confident.  You might even wipe more tears from your eyes than wear smiles.
And - I know you wear that smile -well.  And you even encourage others to do the same.
Which is great!!

You'll want to love big - but sometimes you'll not love big enough.
This is why you're going to write little messages on your kitchen white-board to remind yourself... to live and love well.  To Speak Life!  That is a must.

So, the other day I found a couple of quotes, that I just have to share with you.  I know you love these things.  And - you'll probably want or need to ponder them more than you know or realize.

Turning off distracting noises creates an air of calm, which allows conversation to focus on building relationships, generating peace, expressing love, and providing encouragement.  ~ selected from a Woman's Study Bible
The foremost challenge a woman faces is not to orchestrate her life or to plan her year but to order each day -- allowing for sufficient rest, proper nourishment and exercise, and a quiet time spent with the Lord.  ~ selected from the Creative Home Organizer, Emilie Barnes
“This job has been given to me to do. Therefore, it is a gift. Therefore, it is a privilege. Therefore, it is an offering I may make to God. Therefore, it is to be done gladly, if it is done for Him. Here, not somewhere else, I may learn God’s way. In this job, not in some other, God looks for faithfulness.”

― Elisabeth Elliot
So, at the end of the day, my Dear Self... be strong.  Buck up and hang in there!!  Take and deep breath and go forward.  You can do this!!  You'll never be perfect - you'll never be a Supermom... but you can be a Super Mom!!  Do your best and that is all you can do.

The day will come when they won't be told (what to do) and they'll just do.  I'm telling you.
That day will shock you wide open.
I mean in ways of making their bed, each morning.  Helping with dishes by grabbing a tea towel to dry... cleaning up the yard, or the living room.  Doing their homework...
And when your (three) kiddo's look at you from across the table and out of the blue say things like...
Mom, you're so beautiful.  I like you!!!
I love you Mommy!!
Thanks Mom!
And, they'll willingly come plant a kiss on your cheek or still want to hold your hand...oh wow!!!

Then.  Take it and run.  Because - those things, those words, right there!!
They'll mean the world to you...
And, if you can say "yes" more often... then, you'll be the most blessed.  Even if the yes brings a mess to go along with it.

You know this, I don't need to tell you this... but you only have one life, to live and that one is fleeting - fast - at lightning speed... so live it well.  Be faithful - in the little things!!  An adage you'll certainly live by, and often... is this.
My response will make or break a situation.
And remember - You Will NEVER walk this road alone.  HE is with YOU!!  You have so much to offer.  And.. I hope you do.  Be a blessing and you will be blessed!

Well, I'm going to sign off.  Hopefully, I didn't overwhelm you too much.

Oh and ps...one more thing:
By the way, you'll consistently have a wonderful support by your side.  Your husband and the father of these three busy-blessings will be by your side all of the way... perhaps... even a few steps ahead, most of the time.  But...that explanation is for another time.  Will this be easy... having a man by your side? It's only been a dream of yours from little on up. And that, to be the best wife and mommy you could possibly be.
I would say both YES and NO!!  In some ways.. it'll make it harder... but all the more - worth it.  And, this is something you'll be willing to go through over and over again.

 And, again.
And, again.

Are you encouraged?  I hope so.

Okay... now.  I am going to sign off.  Until next time?

~ Sincerely, your Older Self
 - with ten years of marriage and three kid-blessings under her belt and all accounted for

the theme of {my} story

. . .. .... . .. ... .. .. .. ..... . .. .. .. ... .. .... .. . . .. .
There is a song which we sing at church, every now and again, with a line of lyric that recently has captured my attention.

It talks primarily of God's faithfulness... and of it being the theme of the stories that we read throughout God's Word.

Now...
On this one particular Sunday morning - as we were singing... the thought came to my heart and mind... and immediately took me for a loop.  I struggled to keep singing... because of that so-called lump that formed in my throat.  You get those, too!  Don't you?
Granted this wasn't about me.  But the question was...

What is the theme of my story?

You see.  I have hurt a lot of people.  People have hurt me.
I am human.
I'm not fully able to deliver promises...
Keep my word 100%.
I have big goals.
Great ideas.
Good intentions.
I make suggestions.
However, I rarely ever fully follow through.
Completely.
Or - I do it half-heartedly.
I just can't.
I can try - however - but is is  never enough.

This is, more often than not, the theme of my story. And, I can so quickly get stuck here.
  I'm humbled over it.
I think you know what I'm talking about.
Perhaps you can relate.

We let people down - all of the time.

But... the lyrics of this song are so vibrantly full of truth, life changing and wonderfully full Of HOPE!

Speaking of the faithfulness of our God, I want this to be the constant theme of my story.  I want HIM to be the ever-abiding source and foundation of my story.
JESUS!
He never fails.  He never will.
His Word... says it.  I believe it.  And, that settles it!

The theme of HIS story is constant. Faithful. Steadfast. True.
Doesn't it bring you to chills?  I does, me!
Peace - is more like it.

We can have deep-rooted confidence...in the ONE who goes behind us and before us.
HE IS FAITHFUL - to you and to me!!

I'm so encouraged, now, whenever I sing this song.

And - as well - the lump in my throat is now formulated more out of gratitude rather than of condemnation.  Here it is.. take a listen, if you'd like.  Be encouraged!

****
So - back here in the beginning of May - you might remember I attended a Women's Retreat...with quite a few ladies from our church.
The theme of the weekend was basically this...
To See like Jesus.
Have compassion - like Jesus
Act like Jesus.
All weekend - the phrase "the theme of my story" was on autopilot...on my mind.  On my heart.  Rather heavy at times.  I was encouraged... to know... God wanted this to be on the forefront of my "hearts pondering"....
Hence the photo/quote I designed at the top.
People. Friends... I fail at this all of the time.  I need a reminder!!
I can't do it.
Not in my own strength - at least.
But...I want to cling to His Faithfulness and know that HIS example of seeing; of being compassionate, and the followed-through action he lived out - be the continuing theme of my stories.

I promised a few photos of our fun time together...
The gentleman, here, was our speaker.  Richard E.  He is the father of the gal sitting next to him.  She is also the one sharing an illustration in the left bottom photo.  Great time - in these meetings!
The material used and theme of our weekend was "See Jesus" - the content mostly taken from the book, written by Paul E. Miller - Love Walked Among Us.
What a wonderful, wonderful weekend - getaway!
Very refreshing indeed.
**On a side note:  My hubby did a fabulous job of holding down the fort and keeping home - while I was gone.  It was good to come home to the family and have the blessing of Mother's Day with all its love and sweetness... continue. :)  I'm so blessed!
***
I hope I made you think a little bit - today!
What is the theme of your story - could you say?

Mugs & Muffins ::{Happy} Mother's Day Thoughts, Recipe and Giveaway! (GIVEAWAY - Now Closed!!)

.. ... . .. .. ... .. ... .. .. .. ... .. ... ... ... . .. ... .. . ..
Welcome back to this addition of Mugs and Muffins...

The event that for, at least this year, the year of 2014, is going to come around "randomly" with not a lot of rhyme or reason.  But worth the wait each time.  I hope!
Some of my *newest* friends, here, have been waiting patiently, oh-so-patiently, to see this segment come around again.  So, here we are!  A place for you to
Stay! and Savor the moment just for you.

A place where, I trust, you can feel most comfortable to share your thoughts and be a part...

As a quick refresher.  This is when and where I'd like this post to feel like you're with a nice circle of friends. Some you might know each other well, or at best - recognize each other's name, and others of you not so much.  All are welcome!!
And so, you find yourself, here! You're sitting down for a meeting (so to speak); sharing together a cup of coffee or hot tea and delving into a muffin.  Mmm, scrumptious...you'll murmur between bites. :)

Hopefully, you realize that it is just a muffin recipe that will do...and at least, this is where I'd like to think that you'll say these rhubarb muffins are scrumptious, because they are!!  I'm pretty sure I've shared this recipe before.  But, tis the season. :)

So, why don't we go ahead (pretend!); scoot up your chairs, pass the muffins, fill your mugs - afresh! and lets get started.  Shall we..?

The calendar told us yesterday that it was Mother's Day.  A day to celebrate.  Yes?  Was it day of celebration for you?

Some of you, readers, may not be Mother's. And, that is okay. This may be one of the hardest days of your life. I can understand this.  Some of you are Mothers; actually, most of you are!  And, some are also grandmothers.  I appreciate the diversity of those reading here, today.  It's humbling.  Humbling for so many reasons.  There are various seasons and situations we may find ourselves in.  Times of expectancy.  Times of loss.  Times that are full-blown, bursting wide open with JOY! and there are times of deep, deep heart-breaking pain.   A lot of which I can personally relate to.  However, I could ask so many of you, ladies, to share your thoughts and insight here, today, and it would serve us all to learn from one another.

Today.  I would like to share, with you, just a bit of  my story; a story that may be a bit hard to read.  Honestly, honesty goes deep here and transparency is key.  I hope you can read this today, with an open mind and a care to understand..

I grew up in a Conservative Mennonite family.  The oldest girl of nine (six girls; three boys - respectively).  So, it would be natural for me to say, all I ever wanted was to be a wife and a mother.  That was all I knew! In a way, I can say - "I already raised a family"... I was and had to be a big help to my mom.   My Mom was a great hero of mine - although, I wouldn't have thought about it as so, back then.
Now?  I see it...a lot.  My dad made a HUGE impact as well...
But we're talking about motherhood.
(smile!)
Again.  This was ALL I ever wanted.  And.  Not only just to be a mother... but to be the BEST one I could possibly be. The days of NOT being a wife and a mom seemed long and unending.  Would this ever change for me?  I prayed.  HARD! Finally, marriage.  Finally, a home of my own to keep.  Finally, eventually, motherhood.

When that dream did finally come to fruition, back in 2007, and quickly again in 2008, and when Motherhood, all of a sudden, quite quickly, was not what I expected; meaning, it wasn't full of the warm fuzzies and the lovey-dovey feelings, I had anticipated...something was wrong.  Instead of loving it I began hating it.  (I know.  Hate is a very strong word..)
I did not like being a Mom.  At all.  Parts of it, yes!  But, not really.
However! You must know.  I STILL loved my children.  I still do! (don't read what I didn't write/say!)   I love my kids very, very much.  Each one.  (keep reading, please..)

Still. I found it hard to be cute and snuggly.  I had an imagination and a smile - but, oh I found it hard to articulate that out to my little ones.  I struggled to "let go and enjoy"...
I wished, over and over, that I could get off the train.  The merry-go-round.  The whatever you wanted to call it.  I wanted out.
BIG TIME!
This was a thankless time.  And, I really felt the inconveniences of motherhood.  I realize we all have those thankless and inconvenient moments, come our way, as mom's, but I mean I really felt them..

As well, I strongly disliked (tempted to say it again - "hated") when loving and well-meaning friends would gently and graciously "remind me" of my desires - back in my single years.  They didn't know it, but it felt too much like a ton of salt in the wound.
All of this was...this was a stark realization, a truth of my heart, just a mere three years ago.

((At the time, of this realization, I had two little ones, close together in age, and another baby on the way!))

Today?

By the grace of God... those thoughts are no longer the same.  Those thoughts; they are no longer mine.
Do I still feel overwhelmed?  You bet I do.
Do I ever feel like walking?  You bet I do.
Do I ever feel like quitting?  You bet I do.
My nerves wear thin and I'm tired.

What changed, you ask?

I am not 100% sure, other than, I have come to embrace the calling that God has placed on my life.
Obviously... HE knows I can do this.
He has chosen me to do this job.
He has equipped me.  And, will continue to do so.
Only by HIS grace...can I do it.  It is nothing of me that makes me a better mom over another.
I needed HIM.  I still need Him.
I prayed.  I continue to pray.
I asked for HIS HELP...and He answered.  And, He always will.

As the kids grew, and continue to do so, so has our relationship, and that of my husband's.  We realize, all the more, being a family-team really matters.  By the way.  My husband is the most wonderful of father's there ever was in this world.  I'm so blessed to be the Mother of his children...and I tell him so.

However, currently we, as a family, are in a season that requires a lot of sacrifice and feelings of loneliness - for me.  There are many days when I feel the weight of what it would be like to be a single mom.  I get it!
(my husband has a full schedule & workload with employment and going to school, full-time!)
Still. We are very blessed.

It's hard.  But, again.  It's only a season.  And, I cling to that.
We have one another and we're in this together.

One of the neatest things about being a mom - for me! is the opportunity to visit memories of my childhood with my children and share life-lessons with them.  For instance - "the bike story" (the bike in above photo) is a repeat story and one I'll continue to share often.
It's a story of disobedience (on my part) and redemption (the part of my parents).
These story-moments happen a lot at bedtime.  My children will often beg, "Tell us a story of when you were a kid!", they'll say.

When I see my kids soaking up life, like a sponge, and enjoying; living out, their childhood, making up their own life-stories, I see it as a reflection of who they are because of me (and my husband's) influence.
Again. It's humbling. When the playful, fun-phrase " Oh no!  Here comes the Monster Mom..ahhhh" (and the kids go running off and away!)... becomes more of a reality than I wish. Even that has it's influences and its resemblance of truth.  I regret the selfishness I've displayed in the past.  Selfishness.  That can still rear it's ugly head and I have to surrender my heart, daily, to God's calling for me and my life.

When I hear my kids say I'm beautiful...still... after those ugly moments. And, I've apologized.  I'm humbled.
I see their fragileness.  Their need for affirmation. Their dependency (on me!)...and ultimately, their need for Jesus!
I see the way they look up to me.  The way they listen.   How both influenced and influential they are...
They need me.  I need them.
They bring me flowers, from the yard, in fistfuls.  They plant kisses - unexpectedly and I melt.  They smile and wink at me from across the room.  We sing!  We dance.  We cry.  Together.  They crave my approval...and I like theirs.  But we all know that doesn't always happen...because we're real.  I know when they're being deceitful and "as children are"...and they wonder how?
"Understand it is...because. I am your Mother!", I say.

These. are. my. blessings.
I don't ever want to take them for granted.

This is one awesome privilege and one awesome (huge!) responsibility.

It's not the how, or the what, but the WHO that will put the {happy} in Mother's Day! or any day, for that matter.
Who is that??  Do you know?

Esther 9:28 ~ These days should be remembered and observed in every generation by every family...

{Happy} Mother's Day!

Aubrey recently entered a contest -a Mother's Day; Draw Your Mom! contest...and was selected as one of the winners.  ((I don't know.  There is something fun, to the fact; bragging on my five year old for getting published, in the newspaper.. for the very first time.))

Here she is - missing her first tooth!
At school.  The kids shared their thoughts on Mom this way. And it too, makes me smile.

Oh! Aubrey...

I found these two articles over the weekend and found they were helpful for me to read...just something to think about.

The Wake-Up call.

.. . .. . . .. . .. . . . .. . .. . . . .. . .. .. . .. .. . . .. . . .. . .. . .. . . .. . .. .
Why is it always that one thing you don't expect to hear?

The other morning I woke up to a very distressing wake-up call.  Not to the ringing of the phone... but rather to the words of my 4 year-old son speaking into my ear.  I rolled over, now fully awake... as I hear these words.

"Mom, I'm sorry I got cross with you."

What?  I'm thinking ... "son, you just woke up, and you're saying you're sorry you got upset with me?"

My immediate first thought was a rushing back of the day before and realizing that I had gone to bed...without apologizing to him.  Yes!  I was a pretty grumpy mama pretty much that whole day. I knew it, too.   I had meant to apologize - because I truly was sorry about it, embarrassed and upset by it.  So, you can most likely imagine my second thought to follow was this.

"Caleb, were you dreaming this?"

"Well, yeah."  was his curt reply.  I then took the opportunity to give him a semi-sleepy sort of hug and apologized to him for my behavior the day before and I think he went back to his bed ... and I fell back to sleep.  Sort of.

You see, I was feeling pretty terrible at this point...when I thought about how much this must have affected him?  for one, I was blessed to observe his tender heart, once again.  An everyday example of honest confession.  He's quick to do that.  But, to have his mama so cross at him that he dreamt a dream that in turn caused him to be upset with me?  Who knows really how it all went down.  It was just a dream for him, at least...no matter what happened, I was (still) the one in the wrong.

Yikes!

I really don't want my kids days to turn into their worst nightmares.

Needless to say.  The Lord really gave me a wake-up call through this one.  I certainly didn't expect it to come this way.  But, it definitely got my attention, that's for sure.

Lord, let them ALWAYS have sweet dreams - at least on account of me or if nothing else... about me.  Please?!?!?!?!

"My Story", as I attempted to tell it today. - Part Two & Final

 ... . . .. . .. . . . . .. . . .. . .. . . .. ..

But, here is where the brutal, hard-nose honesty comes in…

(Are you ready, to read this??)

I hate being a mom.

I love being married and I love keeping the home…

Yet, I shouldn’t say that I hate being a mom, because some days that simply isn’t true and hate is a rather strong word, I know, but IT IS CERTAINLY not the rosy picture that Motherhood had been painted in my mind for it to be.

And, now I’m pregnant with my third?  I must be crazy… really, if not yet... I will be.  (tongue in cheek)

Mothering is so H * A * R * D. And what’s even “harder” is when close friends of mine lovingly remind me of those days, and say, "you know Bevy... this was ALL you ever wanted". They have no idea the (bothering) grace-reminder that this is for me.  I do appreciate the reminder.

There are many, many days of tears, and angst over the irruptions and inconveniences. I balk and wallow and fret. And the depths of my soul are revealed more and more of where I am simply a sinner-mommy who needs Jesus every single day. My kids know this and they catch me crying (rubbing their little hands all over my arms and face); they ask me “mommy, what’s wrong?”, and I tell them… the truth.

I need Jesus.

I am amazed over and over at their sincere hearted tenderness (in those moments) and it continues to melt my stone-cold heart and I know - if for nothing else – they’re in my life to reveal the Love of Jesus to me, more and more.

I’m ashamed to admit this – but they are many times when even I scare myself at the back door. I have little or no patience. I'm way too grumpy - grasping to regain control of the given situation.  I struggle to be silly....I'm not a "fun mom"...  I struggle to interact at their level.  Oh, I can get creative and imaginative... but it takes a lot out of me to get me to that point.

I just absolutely cannot believe that I react the way I do at times. And in admitting this, this is where I think the word “hate” comes in. I don’t like what motherhood is revealing in and through me.  It's the process called sanctification....

I preach to myself all of the time, with this saying: “My response makes or breaks a situation”… and I know it’s all a matter of me responding well rather then simply reducing me to a mere reaction. It’s a pure struggle.

***
I think back to my own mom. And, she and I have certainly talked about this…

She had, had a hard life of raising us nine children with, while my dad was a real hard worker, wonderful father and a wonderful provider (they certainly did they’re best) – she continued to deal and work through my dad’s struggles of:

- Depression (which were enough to be hospitalized once or twice, in his life);

-the mental health issues (which required medication for as long as I could remember);

-the spiritual struggles of God’s grace and forgiveness for him

All of these things were things that I know were triggered by an introduction to pornography at a very young age.

Which makes me realize all the more, the awesome responsibility I have as a mom and Scott and I together, in parenting, to be all the more vigilant in the teaching and training of our little ones.  We can't shield them ... only influence them toward the Gospel.

I would like to say I’ve never heard my mom cry or be upset –but that isn’t the truth, although she hid it from us very well.

She certainly had her challenges too, with being a mom. There were many things about her that I vowed I would “break the chain” over. I know she would admit to not having the spiritual support like I’m blessed to have in my life today, even though she grew up Mennonite as well… it just wasn’t offered. So, I am truly blessed.

Now that my dad is HOME-FREE and in Heaven… and like I said it’s been 15 years now… with having little ones to raise, all on her own… I honestly have seen the Grace of God carry my mother through this trial in her life. She grieves but she has never once complained.

And, she still doesn’t. She is purely an inspiration to me and the best example in my life, of what a godly woman, wife and mother should be.

Recently, I went through a ladies Bible Study – a book authored by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, entitled Brokenness. This book was really an eye opener for me as it relates to my calling as a mother, wife and friend.

So, on one hand while I’m learning about brokenness in my life – the Lord is/was really doing a breaking in me – of my will and expectations especially in mothering. I’m still learning. And, though that particular Bible Study is over I still thumb through the pages of that book and my notes and reflect.

Also…I’m desirous to grow more in tune with a life of gratitude. Another book I’m currently reading is called One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp, author of the blog – A Holy Experience. In this book she challenges, with a dare, to LIVE FULLY right where you are. I’ve recently begun the task of naming my thanks… listing things – all the way to 1,000 and beyond, Lord Willing, that come to mind; things of which I am truly grateful for. Things big or small - and sometimes it is the rather simple things.

I’m praying that these two books will continue a work in me. I can feel the battle- raging. It’s a looming task, this work of sanctification that is going on inside of me. Thankfully – it’s the Lord at work. It’s nothing that I am doing to contribute... except perhaps I contribute by providing the mess.

Many of you know… I have a blog at Treasured Up and Pondered (.blogspot.com).

There is where I have found a true blend of encouragement and accountability. I found some dear friends in this blogging world – other moms or women who are often in the same places I find myself in. I welcome you to stop by, there as well, anytime and say hello.

And, MOPS has become a place for much of the same; a place of real encouragement and accountability. If it wasn’t’ for Connie C. really encouraging me to come on out – I would really be missing a blessing in my life. I’ll admit, it’s been tough to get going in the mornings and we’ve had our rough moments – but my kids have really fallen in love with the Moppets ministry. And, I’m glad.

I also knew a lot more ladies then I ever expected. Kelli S., Jen F., Barb M., Patty C., Chrissy B., Cheryl H. and I recognized many, many others… so thank you Connie for your diligence in “pestering” me to take this step. Lord knows – I’m such a homebody and I needed this.

Thank you for letting me share “my story” with you, today, which by the way, is still being written.  Each day is a new journal entry to the pages of my life story.  God is authoring... not I. I would have no idea if anyone can relate or identify with anything I’ve shared… but I just hope that my honesty today was a real blessing to someone.

God bless you in your home and in your mothering. We’re in this “calling” together.

Let’s do our best and be our best!

Amen?

***
As I mentioned in my introduction.  I left MOPS, that day, feeling like I had really flubbed up my story.  I felt like I had missed a lot of key points in what I wanted to say and yet, I have to believe that what I did share was really - enough.

As many different ladies came up to me later to say Thank You!, they encouraged me by admitting that they too have often felt the same way about Mothering - for themselves.  That it's been completely different then they've ever imagined.  My honest approach was such a release for me and a relief to them.

Somebody said it.  We could identify.  Here again, an honest confession is good for the soul.

But, it doesn't mean staying in that place.  My heart's cry and desire from the very beginning - to be the best wife and mom that I could possibly be - still resonates with in me.  I still want that.

It just means completely surrendering myself to My Lord and Master... allowing him to continue to break me, mold me, shape me... into the woman He would have me be.

For me, it's starts with growing in gratitude for my life-calling; it's trials; it's challenges; it's changes.

"My Story", as I attempted to tell it today. - Part One

. . .. . .. .. . .. . . .. . . .. . . .. .. .

I grew up a Conservative Mennonite gal; the oldest of nine – six girls and three boys.

It was a way of life; a religion/culture, but with some sense of relationship; deeply rooted in godly heritage and tradition. It held a deep sense of  at-home community and so getting married, followed by motherhood (for girls) was held in high regard.  Neither Collage nor Careers were encouraged. This was all I knew. I had little expectation of myself but to be anything but the best wife and mother I could possibly be.

I thought that, that day would never come - when I would get married and begin to raise a family of my own.

When I was about to turn 23 I began thinking about and planning to move out on my own. I needed my own space! Tough to do, but I finally convinced my parents that I could do it. An apartment soon became available – in the basement of an old farmhouse where my cousin and her husband lived.  My parent's fears in letting me go were soon calmed… because they knew I wouldn’t be totally alone – out there in that big ole world.

A lot of different things were going on in my life at that point. I was thinking of attending a different church – different then the conservative Mennonite church I had known and attended all my life. I had lots and lots of questions regarding my faith and God’s grace in my life and soon I found a church family that I grew to love and appreciate and my husband and I still attend a church through this group of churches, called Sovereign Grace Ministries.

After moving into this farmhouse basement apartment and being there for about one month… ironically, today marks it to be 15 years (April 13th)…when my dad (age 43) suddenly passed away leaving 8 kids still at home with the youngest being only three years of age.

That left a huge hole in my heart as I would say I was pretty close to my dad… and I miss having him around. I wish – but he never got to meet any of his son-in-laws… and obviously none of his grandchildren. If he were still here on this earth – we would be so blessed. But – we know we’ll see him again, one day. And that is our hope

Many years would pass pass in my single years that I now know were wasted; looking for love and relationship. I prayed and waited and waited and prayed and believed deep down that the day would never come – but I continued to hope.

I will say, though, that through this time my faith strengthened in the Lord and I clung to my Savior to meet me… every single day. I worked those years at a local Christian Bookstore and also at our local hospital on the Pediatrics and Maternity Wards… as a Secretary/ Nurse Assistant. I considered going on to pursue a nursing career but that door sort of closed, rather quickly …and I was content to just be a “testimony” if I could and do my best. I loved my both of those jobs and I believe they were perfect fits for me – God was Sovereign in leading me to both of those employment opportunities.

But realize… I still had this longing down deep to be the best wife and mom that I could possibly be and I still struggled to believe that even God would lead me to the right man for me. I was that Lady in Waiting…

In one way… more out of curiosity… and with the preface that I wanted to know what was wrong with me, (wondering why did I not have any dates or why couldn’t I keep them?) I decided to go online and just do the personality test that eHarmony offered.

Maybe that would provide me some answers.

It did.  I began to understand myself a little more… relaxing, letting go… letting God. But, for some reason, while the matches began to start coming in – like it or not - I kept my subscription to it, not really believing anything would come of it because after all wasn’t this like taking matters literally into my hands?  I wasn’t that sort of girl…
To make a long story short – I did meet my wonderful husband through eHarmony and that was over seven years ago. Next month, on the 14th of May, will be six years of marriage for Scott and I.

To bring you up to the current…we have two little ones Caleb James – who will be four in May and Aubrey Ruth – who will turn three in September. We also are expecting our third child in August.

I can’t believe I am where I am. It’s amazing how time flies and I know I am not the only one who believes that.

But, here is where the brutal, hard-nose honesty comes in…

"My Story", as I attempted to tell it today. The Introduction.

. .. . .. .. .. . .. . .. . . .. ... . .. .

You did AWESOME!!!! Thank you so very much for sharing! You're sweet spirit and honest heart was shining...through the tears ♥ . Mommyhood ain't easy! so glad we don't have to go it alone! Your testimony really seemed to resonate with so many in attendance today. Thanks again for your boldness, and your willingness to share! :)  ~ Ginna

This is the note that I found in my inbox after getting home; after eating lunch; after the kiddo's (finally) fell off to sleep for their afternoon nap.

Today was MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers)!  Every morning, as usual, trying to get two little ones to rush out the door and head to MOPS (or anywhere, for me) can be overwhelming.  There is usually always some hiccup, along the way, that interacts with the already feeling of "out of order", "out of routine" moments of menagerie...around here.

We managed.  With a hot, fresh baked Spinach and Chicken Quiche and homemade doughnuts holes to boot.  (Recipe for the quiche will have to come another day, but HERE is the doughnut recipe.)

I prayed for grace.

You see, this wasn't any ordinary day at MOPS - I was also asked to share "my story" today.  This was a first for me.  I surprisingly was not nervous... then again, I was.  Especially if I was to follow the Other Testimony.  I knew my friend's story was going to be a real tearjerker.  And it was.
As it worked out, I ended up speaking after Jen, which in the end... it all worked out.

Of course, since I'm home... I've been mentally critiquing and evaluating myself with: You forgot to say this;  You totally missed that... Could anyone truly relate to or understand what you were sharing?  You're voice was cracking so badly... you should be embarrassed... and on and on.

But, you know?  I really need to trust the Lord that what I shared today was exactly what I needed to share.  I was so encouraged, after the fact, as fellow MOPS moms came up to me afterward to say "thank you" for my words and my honesty.  I felt their genuine love and care.

So without further adiue... here are the first few paragraphs to "my story"... and the rest will come at a later time.

“MY STORY”

Recently I was asked to share “my story”. (gulp). When I got the call from Ginna… I knew immediately what she was calling me for and I now believe it was all a part of God’s plan – in getting me to think about it – as literally, minutes before the phone rang, had just read the words, “My Story”, on the MOPS newsletter and wondered to myself “whatever could that be, about?”  Now, I know. (smile)

I guess, it’s my turn to fill in the blanks….

I honestly don’t feel like I have this huge redeeming story to share with you; that will make you sit there and choke back tears. But, as I spent the past few weeks reflecting on what God’s been doing in my life and where I’ve been and where I’m going … I will venture to say this, that what I do have to say will and maybe, hopefully, be a place where others can identify

I grew up a Conservative Mennonite gal; the oldest of nine – six girls and three boys...
